Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have introduced legislation to protect two new areas in the John Day Basin as wilderness. They are known as Cathedral Rock and Horse Heaven. Both areas are across the river from newly designated Spring Basin wilderness and have come about due to proposed land exchanges with adjoining landowners. In Cathedral Rock, the public will gain access to new river frontage for boaters and in Horse Heaven we will have great opportunities for hiking the uplands.
Please call or write our Senators to thank them for their efforts. Tell them why wilderness designation is important to you and encourage them to pursue additional efforts in the John Day Basin to protect areas such as Sutton Mountain, the Lower John Day River Canyon, and the Owyhee Canyonlands. There are millions of acres of unprotected desert wildlands in Oregon and with their leadership we hope to see more wilderness designated. Click here to send an e-mail to Senators Merkley and Wyden!
