This event is a unique opportunity to see Sweet Crude, a film that captures the tragedies of oil extraction in the Niger Delta. The film illuminates the political, environmental, and economic dimensions of oil extraction in Nigeria and exposes the consequences for local communities.

In Washington, The Energy Security Through Transparency Act (ESTT) has been introduced into the Senate and is soon to be introduced in the House in order to combat many of the problems that Sweet Crude addresses.  The ESTT will require oil, mining, and gas companies registered with the SEC to publish payments made to governments for the commercial extraction of these resources.  This increased transparency in payments is an important first step that can lead to citizen empowerment, government accountability, and an atmosphere more conducive to environmental and human rights movements.

Filmmaker Sandy Cioffi will be in attendance and will also hold a discussion following the screening.

Raising awareness about the Energy Security Through Transparency Act is especially important in the Portland area because Senators Merkley has just signed on as a co-sponsor of ESTT and Senator Wyden is a potential co-sponsor. Constituent awareness and backing could influence Senator Wyden to formally sign on to the legislation and encourage Senator Merkley to raise his voice as a champion of the issue.

Please join us in viewing Sweet Crude and hear directly from the filmmaker in Portland, Oregon at the historic Hollywood Theatre on Wednesday, April 14th at 7:00pm.   Tickets are free of charge on a first come first serve basis.
