Oregon climate legislation in jeopardy, your help needed TODAY!

Throughout the legislative session, the Sierra Club has asked you to support important climate protection legislation such as Senate Bill 80, which would move Oregon forward on regulating greenhouse gas emissions from coal-burning power plants and other sources. We were able to help pass the ‘A-engrossed’ version of SB 80 through the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee on May 6. The bill has been sitting in the Ways and Means committee ever since.

Unfortunately, lobbyists for polluting industry and coal-burning utilites like PGE and Pacificorp appear to have hijacked SB 80 while it has been sitting in the Ways and Means Committee. They are pushing amendments that could turn SB 80 into a bill that would actually prevent the State of Oregon from reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal plants, heavy industry and transportation.

We are asking you to please contact your State Senator and Senate Leadership TODAY and urge them to oppose the industry amendments to SB 80. Click here to send a personalized letter to your State Senator.

We have provided a draft letter below that you can utilize to help write a personal letter or make a phone call.  Your personalized e-mails and phone calls are far more effective than sending a form letter.  Please take the time to write and/or call your state Senator and the following Senate  leaders TODAY.

Draft letter to your Senators and the Senate leaders above:

Dear Senator,

I am writing to urge you to support Senate Bill 80 A-engrossed as passed the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on May 6. Unfortunately, since that time polluting industry and coal-burning utilities have been trying to make substantial policy amendments to this bill in the Ways and Means committee that would render SB 80 meaningless, or even tie the state’s hands from being able to achieve real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. I urge you to reject the industry amendments to SB 80 A-engrossed should they emerge from the Ways and Means Committee.

SB 80 A-engrossed, as adopted by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on May 6, would require state agencies to establish clear plans and timelines to achieve significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions over the next decade in order to meet Oregon’s greenhouse gas reduction goals.

However, since May 6, industrial polluters and coal-burning utilities like Pacificorp and PGE have sought to water down SB 80 A-engrossed in the Ways and Means Committee, rendering it meaningless, or worse, tying the state’s hands from being able to effectively reduce global warming pollution in a timely fashion.

These industry amendments should be rejected if they are adopted by the Ways and Means Committee.

Again, please ensure that industry-backed amendments to SB 80 A-engrossed do not pass and that Oregon only pass strong climate protection legislation supported by organizations such as the Sierra Club.

Sincerely,
